ولكن هذه الرحلة الفكرية، مع هذا، هى رحلة المؤلف الفردية، فهو الذى تفاعل مع ما حوله من تجارب منذ أن وُلد فى دمنهور ونشأ فيها إلى أن انتقل إلى الإسكندرية ومنها إلى نيويورك ثم أخيرًا إلى القاهرة حيث استقر به المقام. فإذا كانت هذه الرحلة الفكرية، سيرة غير ذاتية، فهى أيضًا سيرة غير موضوعية، سيرة إنسان يلتقي فى فضاء حياته الخاص بالعام، ولهذا فهو لا يذكر القضايا الفكرية المجردة وحسب، وإنما يشفعها دائمًا بأحداث من حياته أو اقتباسات من كتاباته تبين كيف ترجمت القضية الفكرية (العامة) نفسها إلى أحداث ووقائع محددة فى حياته الشخصية (الخاصة) وذلك بأسلوب المؤلف السلس والعميق والساخر. وهذه الطبعة الجديدة تتميز بعض الإضافات وأهمهما ملحق صور كبير يتناول رحلة المؤلف ومحطات حياته المختلفة.
