حدثت هذه القصة حوالي عام 1921 في حي الحسينية ومازال مسرح حوادثها قائما كما هو، وقد تكون كف السنين بدلت وجهه بالفناء والهدم، والبناء والتنظيم.. إلا أن الكثير من علاماته المميزة مازالت قائمة على حالها لم يخن عليها الدهر، ولم يبدلها الزمن.
وأشهر هذه العلامات وأشدها ارتباطًا بقصتنا صنبور المياه الحكومي. القائم في إحدى زوايا درب السماكين، أمام كشك صغير تربع فيه "سيد الدنك" المانح المانع، الآمر الناهي في مياه الحي. الحاكم بأمره في صف طويل عريض من النسوة ذوات الصفائح، والرجال ذوي القرب.
وكم أود لو وضعت القارئ في مسرح القصة وجعلته يتجول في أزقته وحواريه، ويراها رأى العين.. ولكنني أشك كثيرا في أن قارئ هذا الجيل يستطيع الوصول بسهولة إلى هذه الربوع القديمة التي دالت دولتها وأدبر عزها وعفى جمالها وزال سؤددها، وأضحت قصورها أطلالا بالية ودمنا عافية.. ومع ذلك فليس أحب إلى من التطوع بقيادته إلى هناك واصطحابه في جولة قصيرة سريعة، تعطى له مجرد فكرة سطحية عابرة عن المكان، الذي أوشك أن أزج به إليه. واضعه فيه، خلال فترة قراءته لهذه القصة.
